League Cup: Arsenal and Chelsea qualify at the expense of Leicester (2-0) and Barnsley (6-0)

Arsenal, winner in Leicester (2-0), and Chelsea, wide scorer from Barnsley (6-0) with a hat-trick from Havertz, crossed the 3rd round of the League Cup on Wednesday.

Arsenal continues its momentum. The Gunners defeated Leicester (2-0) to secure their ticket for the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday night. In a match where the two teams were largely reshuffled, Arsenal got the better of a billiard shot in the area at the initiative of Nicolas Pépé, leading to a goal against his camp of Fuchs (57th), then was definitely sheltered thanks to Nketiah (90th). After their success in the Community Shield against Liverpool (1-1, 5 shots on goal to 4) and their promising start to the season in the Championship (two wins in two matches), David Luiz's teammates confirmed their good form at the moment.

Arranged in 4-4-2, the Gunners generally dominated the meeting. Mikel Arteta had however chosen to turn, leaving Lacazette on the bench, and not even summoning Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. In the absence of these two heavyweights of the attack, it was Reiss Nelson who took over. The former Hoffenheim moved a lot in front, but narrowly missed in the last move (31st), or stumbled on an attentive Danny Ward (4th). Little in sight in the first period, Nicolas Pépé gradually woke up to finally become decisive by causing the goal of Fuchs against his camp (57th).

Havertz signs a hat-trick for Chelsea, Giroud also scorer

But Leicester was not unworthy. Without Jamie Vardy and an orphan defense from Soyuncu and Stones, the Foxes could have won with a bit of luck. As when James Madisson saw his shot coiled at the entrance to the surface hit the post of Bernd Leno (39th). The German goalkeeper will have had a good meeting, especially saving his own when Iheanacho appeared alone against him (6th). Pushing to return to the score, the men of Brendan Rodgers finally saw their hopes dashed by Eddie Nketiah (90th). Following a scramble, the young English striker took advantage of Ward's passivity to push the ball into the net.

In the other matches of the evening, Chelsea easily defeated Barnsley (6-0). After a complicated start to the game, the Blues took place, rookie Kai Havertz signing a hat-trick (29th, 55th, 65th). Olivier Giroud also stood out by closing the mark (83rd). Everton qualified by beating Fleetwood (5-2), while Newcastle demonstrated against Morecambe (7-0).
